Temple Israel is affiliated
with the United Synagogue of America, the congregational arm of the
Conservative Movement. Our worship services conform to the Conservative
Movement's blend of tradition and change. We pray principally in Hebrew
according to the inherited liturgy. Our services are fully egalitarian.
Shabbat worship at Temple
Israel blends the ancient and the modern:
- Friday evening services
feature considerable portions of English prayer.
- Saturday morning
services are traditional, Hebrew services. The Torah reading is according
to the triennial cycle.
Basic to our philosophy is
the idea that the present is enriched and the future ensured through
education.
We are firmly committed to educational opportunities for both
Jewish youth and adults.
- Family Shabbat
celebrations occur monthly on Friday evenings.
- Holiday celebrations
include a grand Purim Masquerade, community Passover Seder, Simchat Torah
and Hanukkah.
- Temple staff and laity
periodically teach basic Hebrew.
- Before major holidays,
hands-on workshops are offered including "Handling the Haggadah"
and Mastering the Mahzor.
- Tot Shabbat meets each
Shabbat providing a religious experience for 3-6 year olds.
- Junior Congregation
meets every week.
- Jewish Arts Programs
provide opportunities for adults to learn to sound shofar; trope for
Torah; haftarah; megillah; and leading services.
- Weekly Talmud and Bible
study with Rabbi Ezring.
- Adult Bar/Bat Mitzvah
programs are on going.
